Formed in Ontario, Canada in 2009, Gypsy Chief Goliath hits hard with their fourth LP, Masters of Space and Time, released by Kozmik Artifactz.. While the title might sound kind of trippy, that is not what you get here. These guys produce a sound that is equally heavy stoner rock and Black Sabbath influenced hard rock. Every song has heavy guitar and bass lines that just enfold the listener with its thickness. The vocalist and founder of the band Al Yeti Bones, alternates between growling his vocals or singing like a lower pitched less hyperbolic Ozzy. The LP leads off with "City of Ghosts" which really encapsulates what they do. Its riff is massive, with obvious Sabbath influences, but at the last section they change it up with some nice keyboard work by Mark Calcott and some downtuned guitar. The three guitarists Dustin Black, John Serio, and Al Yeti Bones all meld their guitars together into very thick and heavy riffs without feeling ponderous. Darren Brush's bass locks in with Adam Saitti's drumming to really propel the music as they do on the epic eponymous song, "Masters of Space and Time". "Into the Sun" really changes things up with sections that reminded me of Faith No More. "Stranger Desires" made good use of the keyboard/thick guitar melange to envelop the listener while the drums powered the song. All in all I liked this LP as it delivers consistent heavy riffs, interesting arrangements (for the most part), and deep grooves. If their hooks were a little more memorable they could really take off in the future.
