Pocket Size: Immortality-Cleaning The Mirror Vol. 2

The Swedish instrumental progressive rock band Pocket Size is led by guitarist/composer Peter Pedersen. He formed the project in 2010 and has released five albums to date including the latest titled Immortality-Cleaning The Mirror Vol. 2, the second in the trilogy. This is another band completely new to me. A couple years back the band released Vemood, the first in the series.

This is a very majestic sounding disc with the music heavily influenced by the ‘60s psychedelic movement. It is also quite progressive and jazzy at times beginning with the first track “Thee Who Emerge At Dawn”. Wisps of cymbals and psychedelic guitar notes invoke a mellow tone. Other instruments join and the sound is very refined. Suddenly the tempo changes, led by saxophone and the groove picks up. Its back and forth between a surreal dream and urgent tempos. The Hammond B3 organ and guitar work are outstanding. A great groove highlights “Clairvoyant”, very jazzy at the start before wonderfully psychedelic guitar and organ solos take us back in time a few decades. Just a great groove laden track. “Quantum Suicide” is a slow burning psychedelic romp with fantastic organ and guitar. Another time warp back to the ‘60s and I absolutely love it. Heavier riffs enter to break up the smoky haze. Another great guitar solo rips up the soundscape in the rocking “Cyclopes And Pine Trees” and the sax is put in the spotlight as well.

This is another excellent listen from 2018. Too bad I didn’t get to it sooner as it surely would have made my end of the year list. Psychedelic music for the modern age.
