Lightfold: Deathwalkers

Lightfold is a band in the symphonic mold if Savatage ever hung out with Great White. “Save Me” is a smart opening for a band that going to have a tough time fitting in a category. They are billed as a power metal outfit but it’s not accurate due to the melodic structure of their work such as “Behind the Veil” which should serve as a single to showcase their new age metal pipes.

“Deathwalkers Julia” is another track full of operatic production and careful guitar work destined to bring anther set of fans to these Greek innovators of semi-symphonic majesty. You get the haunts of Fates Warning in “Beyond the Unknown” a slower tempo tale of universal discovery of what we do not understand in a mysterious cosmos.

In “Demon Upon Me” and “The Battle” we get the synth action in full swing with very engaging drums beating an anthem right to the doorway of the nether regions. The latter track has a distinct very early Dream Theater influence but it departs quickly and the song races with a power metal mystique only present in this song of the album.

The last song “At the Gates of Heaven” lays on the creepy background vocals and cinematic musical intros in an extended fashion until you realize this is an instrumental piece and ends the album without a lyrical bow I was truly hoping to hear. Lightfold has the chops and the material to put together a concept album that may explore more fully the themes and thoughts present in this group of tracks but I am left wondering if there was more metal to be galvanized in a such a large pool of talent.
