Tyr: Hel

If Celtic Frost and Bathory had a lovechild its name would be Tyr. The opening track “Gates of Hel” is a perfect example of crunching melody mixed with harsh vocals to form a cohesive almost black progressive metal sound. “All Heroes Fall” is fantastic track to follow since it expands their reach with a more Helloweenish influence and less scratchy vocal. There are a few Danish-language tracks here but I cannot really review them other than to say they are far less heavy than the English-language ones. “Garmr” is a true gem and should be a solid single to advertise the diverse scope of Hel, an album that’s already proving to be one of my favorites this year 2019. Kudos to the lead guitarist for establishing a thoroughly original approach to a genre that often seems to ape every other act. Midway through this album is an excellent example of progressive metal epic song complete with interesting bridges, super solos and passionate vocals “Empire of the North” is aptly titled and definitely a standout.

Tyr is a stellar example of metal making a strong comeback with such incredible tracks as “Fire and Flame,” “Against the Gods, “and “Songs of War” full of intelligent lyrics, tremendous skin bashing with rousing drum numbers, inspired guitar riffs and a vocalist who shares his commitment with every breath. Hel is their seventh studio release and I am apologetic I haven’t listened to any of the past but will make it a point to do so. The future of metal depends of bands such as Tyr to keep us engaged and away from other forms of music that are made for instant disposal rather than eternal dedication.
