Orion's War: Scores of War

Orion’s Reign opens the album Scores of War with “Elder Blood” which is an epic track of Helloween-influenced symphonic metal with a strong sense of film score and theatric drama. In “The Gravewalker” they proceed to build a dark atmosphere of chorus-driven Iron Maiden structured story-song with great effect and mood. Throughout “The Undefeated Gaul” the lead vocal eerily sounding like the late Midnight from Crimson Glory screeches the passion of a great warrior standing undefeated on a fantastical battleground. The guitar work and synth instruments are outstanding on this shorter track perhaps meant to be released as a single.

“Freedom is Not Negotiable” is really the hallmark of this band and symphonic metal in particular where superior arrangement and sharp lyrics meet to make a true piece of art. With “Withering Heart” the band reverts to a slow tempo track of reflection and rousing emotionality that steers from the anthem-like themes too often populated in this style due to the symphonic burden exploited through the project. The lead vocalist does a tremendous job to lead this band which sounds more like an orchestra firing all weapons big and small into the landscape of recording. I still wonder what the future brings for symphonic metal outfits in terms of touring and maintaining the high-quality experience captured on the digital format, but this genre is no longer a fade but rather a firm fixture flourishing with every effort brought forth. Orion’s Reign has increased the bar and earned the right to be a valuable member of the metal community.
