Sunrise Auranaut: Inserter

The fifth album from Russian multi-instrumentalist and composer Vitaly Kiselev finds him taking Sunrise Auranaut in a slightly less keyboard-oriented direction while maintaining the project’s strong symphonic prog roots. Inserter, like Sunrise Auranaut’s previous albums, is an all-instrumental affair that allows Kiselev the creative freedom to create music that fits the spirit of his intriguing song titles.

The first two tracks -- “The Flight Continues” and “In the Old House” -- strike happy tones in much the same way as some of Kiselev’s influences (Camel, Eloy, Yes) , while “Keeper of the Forest Castle” takes an Ayreon-like turn, with darker overtones that definitely convey the title’s mood. On “Fog,” an unexpected melancholy pervades one of the album’s shortest tracks, while “The Saga of the Discoverers (Parts 1 & 2: Obstructions Enclosed in Desires & Guiding Star)” is anchored by Kiselev’s often-overlooked guitar playing as Alexander Malakhov’s synthesizers propel Sunrise Auranaut’s signature sound.

While Inserter is a rather tame listen that becomes repetitive as the 43-minute disc plays on, positive energy and a sense of familiarity make the warm-sounding album a rewarding listen. And on the dense closing track, “Hello, Star Man I,” Sunrise Auranaut takes a couple of new twists -- suggesting Kiselev is far from done.
