Foghound: Awaken To Destroy

Baltimore, Maryland band Foghound have been through an incredibly hard time lately with the tragic murder of their bass player Rev. Jim Forrester in late 2017 (RIP). Add to that the bassist was undergoing some serious health concerns. On behalf of the family the band released the benefit single “Keep On Shoveling”, featuring Forrester’s acoustic guitar and spoken words, which appears on the new album Awaken To Destroy.

The band formed a few years back and released their 2013 debut Quick, Dirty and High followed by The World Unseen in 2016. This brings us to their latest platter, the aforementioned Awaken To Destroy, their second release on Ripple Music.

This is some bad ass heavy rock and roll beginning with the album opening title track. The catchy chord progressions and heavy fuzzed out riffs form the template as the band adds a psychedelic mysteriousness which melds perfectly with the heaviness of it all. The vocals are also pretty catchy. On “Known Wolves” the breakneck tempo is matched by the semi-frenzied vocals before they slow it down adding some nice textural elements and full on psychedelia. “Filthy” is a mid-paced stoner rocker with spacey riffage leading to the incredibly thick riffs of “In Due Time…”, a bone shattering heaviness with a ferocious guitar solo. Again the band adds psychedelic textures to lighten the intensity. The energetic and garage-like “Cut The Cord” and the outstanding “Keep On Shoveling” are more great tracks with the former featuring excellent guitar work throughout.

Not much else to say really except that if you dig hard rock and metal Awaken To Destroy should be sought out immediately. It is that good.
