Shalash Band is the Russian duo of Dmitry Karavaev (keyboards) and Maxim Smirnov (drums and percussion) based out of Moscow. Shalash is the title of their debut album. If you enjoy keyboard led progressive rock with influences ranging from Keith Emerson to Rick Wakeman to Gary Brooker, you will likely find plenty to dig into here. The sound is so rich and full you might not think this is only the work of two musicians but that is indeed the case.
Static effects and talking vocals quickly settles into a joyous sounding keyboard in the album opening “54321”. It’s an uplifting and melodic tune with multiple keyboard parts you would swear was the work of multiple players. “12/8” has a heavy dub-like sound to start before twisting into an ear catching melody with wonderful keyboards including synths and organ. You just got to love those analog keyboards, the organ solo is particularly inspiring. The melody in “V.S.” is really quite magical as the keyboards bend, weave and shimmer throughout the piece. On “S.Z.” pulsating synths fade in and out of the soundscape and the swirling keyboards/organ along with a nice bass groove makes for more symphonic ear candy.
This is a truly impressive debut album, perhaps the ‘best’ symphonic progressive rock I have heard from Russia thus far. For those into keyboard minded music, this should be an easy choice. Highly recommended.
