DBA: The Sky is Falling

Originally released in 2001 with the title Doing Business As..., Metalville Records has just reissued the album as The Sky is Falling by the short lived power trio of Rick Derringer, Tim Bogert & Carmine Appice, otherwise known as DBA. With the pedigree that these three have, obviously you know there's going to be a wealth of solid blues-rock going on here, and that is indeed the case. Derringer has long been one of the more underrated axe-slingers in rock, and he's in fine form here lending his molten guitar licks to tunes like the scorching title track, the anthemic "Blood From a Stone", the funky & bluesy "Everybody's Comin", the ZZ Top-ish "Telling Me Lies", and the hook laden melodic rock cut "Dawn of Love". Of course, the rhythm team of Bogert & Appice (Cactus/Vanilla Fudge/Beck Bogert & Appice) are fantastic as always, Bogert's meaty bass lines permeating each of these songs and Carmine's always thunderous drums giving the album a fat bottom end. "Boys Night Out" sees the trio crank up some energetic, almost Van Halen styled raunch 'n' roll, complete with plenty of Derringer guitar pyrotechnics, and the slow, grinding blues of "Alone Now" is another launch bad for some gut wrenching guitar work. Throw in a couple of ballads and remakes of old Derringer staples "Hand On Sloopy" and "Rock n Roll Hootchie Coo", and you have a fun album from three very familiar faces who sadly didn't keep the train rolling on this little excursion.
