Black Sabbath is so important to the metal tradition that music inspired by them could crop up anywhere with little complaint. Finnish metallers Musta Risti (“Black Cross”) belong to that post-Sabbath generation and fans should welcome them warmly and openly. Like other Sabbath-inspired bands, Musta Risti isn’t trying to copy or recreate the magic of the original band so much as they are extending the post-Sabbath sound in cool and contemporary ways. To listen to this album is to experience the joy of the riff within a cascade of fuzz. The music is organic, lo-fi, and fuzzed out to perfection. The band is obviously having fun and their energy is infectious. Fans of riffy and funky doom should love Musta Risti’s overall sound and style. Their twin guitar attack is heavy and tight while their vocals ring out with a nice blend of piercing shrieks and mid-tempo singing. Some listeners may wonder if they can enjoy an album performed entirely in Finnish. Don’t worry about it. If you appreciate fuzzed out boogie-doom, you’ll catch on quickly. Check out “Peto” and “Laivue” for sure. If you like those, stick around for more groovy goodness.
