Klose, Jann: In Tandem

Singer/songwriter Jann Close grew up in a number of countries; Germany, South Africa, Kenya, United States. He is now based out of New York City. His last album MOSAIC was released in 2013. His new album titled In Tandem was recorded in South Africa and that influence can be heard in some of the rhythms and melodies. Klose has written a catchy pop album so if complexity is what you seek this won’t be for you. But if you want some stylish and catchy pop rock tunes read on.

“Love High” starts off the album with an easy going acoustic guitar, in the vein of America, and nice lead vocals. Klose has a melodic voice, very easy on the ears and in perfect pitch. Jangly guitars add to the song’s uplifting sensibility. “Dear Mel” is another melodic pop tune with an ear catching vocal and nice acoustic guitar. Background Hammond helps to fill out the sound. An album highlight has to be the Gabriel tune “Don’t Give Up” with great vocals and bass work. Klose’s vocals certainly have some Gabriel inflections and guest Annie Haslam knocks it out of the park with a mesmerizing vocal performance. The plaintive acoustic guitar and vocals in “What Have You Got To Say?” makes for another striking and heartfelt tune. Klose’s vocals are truly enchanting. The soaring vocals in “Never Fall”, the rich string orchestrations in “You And I (Cosmic Love)” and the ‘70s inflected pop of “Pour The Champagne”, featuring excellent vocals from Karen Zoid, are all examples of intelligent pop music.

I suppose I am a sucker for some well-done pop music, oh well. It’s a nice break from my usual complicated fare and I can enjoy it for what it is, and not care what it isn’t. And those vocals are pure ear candy…
