Grand Astoria, The: Deathmarch

Here is another Russian band promoted by the Addicted Label. The Grand Astoria formed in 2009 and hail from St. Petersburg. This is a review of their Deathmarch EP released in 2013. Psychedelic/Stoner rock and metal is what this band is all about. The fuzzed out textures and riffs abound so if you are into the genre this will be a good one to check out.

The disc begins with “Now or Never” with its otherworldly soundscapes of blips and bleeps bleeding into guitar feedback and crazily distorted riffs. A singular guitar line unfolds, pretty catchy amidst all the distorted effects and then the fuzz laden guitar riffs take the listener into heavier climes. The fuzz drenched guitar solo and excellent riff progressions are highlights. The title track is more off kilter, especially the guitar riffs. The band’s considerable chops are on full display. With “World Without a Smile” the sound is mellow at the start, a real psychedelic moodiness with nice backing vocals as well. I should mention the lead vocals are quite good and the singer has good command of the English language. The music gets more ‘metal’ with swirling guitar riffs and synths. More odd metered rhythms can be heard on “Aelita, The Queen of Mars”, another very trippy outing. The last track “No Way Out” is a nice mixture of mellow and heavy all shrouded in a psychedelic haze.

Deathmarch will be well worth your time (roughly thirty minutes) if stoner hard rock and metal suits your fancy. You just got to love DIY projects as well done as this. Recommended.
