Hubbard, Diana: LifeTimes

Diana Hubbard, daughter of L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church Of Scientology released her one and only album in 1979 titled LifeTimes. It is unclear why the pianist made only one album but one might speculate the church might have gotten in the way. Anyways, the album was never released internationally and now has been reissued for the first time on CD by Angel Air Records. The guest list here is quite impressive including the likes of Stanley Clarke (bass on “Dream #23”), Chick Corea (synthesizers on “Bewitched”), Patrick Moraz (synthesizer on “Morning”) and Denny Seiwell (drums).

The music is all instrumental, in the realm of jazz, classical and pop. It’s an elegant and finely crafted record beginning with “Rose Colored Lights” which was released as a single. Lovely piano and bass form a romantic melody where percolating synthesizers subtly merge through the lush, string filled arrangement. “Morning” features Moraz’s gentle synthesizer ripples and another absorbing piano melody from Hubbard. “Russian Roulette” is a two part movement where the piano varies from delicate to more passionate strokes and the strings and synthesizers soften the soundscape. It really is a beautifully orchestrated piece.

Really, the entire album is well worth hearing, especially for those who gravitate towards piano led pop, classical and jazz. Apparently Hubbard wanted to make another record but unfortunately that didn’t happen. What a shame.
