Pree Tone: Kiddy
Hailing from Kiev, Ukraine, Pree Tone is a noise rock/shoegaze outfit that has been around for a few years now. They released three EPs in 2014, Brights, Wild Highs and Simmer followed by D-A and the EP L’Illustré in 2017 and culminating with their 2018 release titled Kiddy. On the new album there is little information given, just the song titles, but I did dig up the band member names. They include Serhii Kupriichuk, Levgan Ivanchenko, Vladislav Bjesky and Volodymyr Onyshenko. Apparently this is the first album released after a line-up change reduced the band to a quartet.
OK, on to the album. There are six tracks, each around six or seven minutes in length. I really haven’t listened to much music of this kind so this was a bit of an eye opener for me. I was surprised to find myself actually enjoying some of these tracks. There is a hypnotizing effect as the band often employ repetitive elements such as the main riff which helps to lock these sounds into the listener’s head. Whether or not you will like this is another story entirely. The first track “Treasures Fall”, a noisy track with a punk influence, especially with the monotone vocals, is quite decent. The fact they are half buried in the mix suits the band’s somewhat muddled sound. Through all the noise they also mix in a quieter interlude where the guitar is more discerned and some very trippy effects are used. The overlapping riffs in “Maze Of 60 Ticks” are pretty cool and the repetitive and trancelike “Safe And Sound” creates an interesting sound palette of noise and feedback. The riff monster also drives “Token” through both heavy and calm moments. A pretty trippy jam-like sound in this one.
Although this is music I am not typically exposed to it’s always good to expand your tastes, at least in my opinion. For so called noise rock this is pretty good stuff.
