Disen Gage: Nature

And now for something completely different. Disen Gage is a Russian experimental project that formed in 1999. I believe they have six albums to their credit including their latest titled Nature. The band is also down to two members; Konstantin Mochalov and Anton Efimov. There were no instrument lists given, not that it would matter much given the nature of this music. There are only three tracks but each is over fifteen minutes. I really wouldn’t consider these songs so much as sound experiments. The first track “Planets” begins with a barrage of semi-organized chaos, very intense with guitar rumbling and all sorts of effects. It’s also a little spacey as the synths can be heard through the noise. Next is “Trains” beginning with quieter drones with a bit of an eerie vibe invoked. This could almost be the soundtrack to some obscure horror movie. Waves of sound develop throughout the piece, easing off then starting again, interspersed with more ambient-like moments. Just don’t ask me what instruments the duo used here as it is near impossible to tell, at least to my untrained ears. Wind effects and a nuanced bass line begin “Animals”, the third and final track. Various sounds and effects creep into the mix as the wind howls on what could be some far flung planet in the far edge of the galaxy. Yes, this is a very unworldly sounding disc that is a difficult listen while still having an hypnotizing effect.

Strange, weird, outside the norms of conventional music, the duo’s experimental approach to sound manipulation cannot be overstated. If avant-garde instrumental music is in your wheelhouse you might want to check this out by clicking on the link below.
