Austerlitz, Paul: Water Prayers for Bass Clarinet

Paul Austerlitz is a Finland born jazz musician who moved to the US at the age of one and specializes in the bass clarinet. He has taken world influences, a deep spirituality from his travels and his passion as a musicologist and produced a trilogy of albums, his latest titled Water Prayers for Bass Clarinet.

The first two tracks are based on traditional Haitian arrangements; “Legba nan baye-a” and “Rara Indivisible”. A fast paced joyous feel marks the first track with a marvelous piano solo from Benito González while the second is more rocking with some ‘wah wah’ moments, presumably from Austerlitz’s bass clarinet, that are absolutely head turning. The slow and sultry “Finnish Waltz” where again González’s fluid piano work shines and Austerlitz’s bass clarinet lines mesmerize and the deep lows in the funky “Funkay-Be-Sea” are well worth your attention. The bass work of Santi DeBriano is also sure to impress. The ending track “Lapriyè Djò” has Austerlitz switching to saxophone with some lovely results. It’s a perfect wind down track to what is an excellent jazz album. This is post-bop done to the highest of standards.

Austerlitz and his band have all the ingredients of a great jazz band. Water Prayers for Bass Clarinet is an album I easily recommend.
