Deutsch, Elliot: Make Big Band Great Again

For someone who initially didn’t mean to write a political record, well, that didn’t quite happen because this record has politics written all over it. I am talking about the new album (his third) from jazz composer and arranger Elliot Deutsch. Deutsch is from Los Angeles and the album in its infancy was supposed to be a tribute to that great city. He began writing in 2016 and we all know US politics was highly charged then and still is now. The artist couldn’t help but be influenced by the politics of the day resulting in Make Big Band Great Again. A smart play on words for sure. And don’t worry if the politics isn’t to your liking as this is just music with no words attached.

The disc begins with a nice rendition of “America, the Beautiful” with saxophone and trombone at the forefront. “Fake News” sets a faster pace and is much more rocking including a nice trombone solo. With “Repeal and Replace” the urgently swinging pace with sax and trombone dominating the sound (in a good way) eases off into a softer direction before the band sets on fire once again. More great horn rhythms and some nice lead guitar from Will Brahm. One of the nicest melodies on the disc can be found on the unbridled joyfulness of “The Great Wall”, as if this immigration policy would somehow lead to a ‘better’ America. I should the say the artist believes in just the opposite. I love the saxophone solo here. The last song “Pink Sunset” pays homage to L.A. The trombone solo is absolutely gorgeous.

My only complaint with the album is that it ends too soon. It would have been nice to have digested a few more tracks to get a better sense of what this band has to offer. That said, the five tracks are very good and for those who like swinging jazz this will be a nice purchase.
