Bob Dourough Trio: But For Now

Jazz pianist/vocalist Bob Dorough was born in 1923. He began his jazz explorations as the pianist for Sugar Ray Robinson. He released his first album as a band leader in 1957 titled Devil May Care and followed that up with many releases until his final album But For Now in 2015. Dorough unfortunately passed away in April, 2018.

I must admit to being unfamiliar with this trio before giving this one a spin. And that’s a shame because this is really something special. The album has that sentimental touch that takes us back a few decades, led by Dorough’s slightly gravelly vocals containing just the right amount of character and passion injected with his beguiling sense of humour.

You can really get what this album is all about with the first track “Baltimore Oriole”, an old school jazz tune with a wonderful piano melody, charming lead vocals and soaring sax work. It all feels very intimate, as if you were in a jazz club and really feeling the performance. The second track “The Girl From Ipanema” is just as good. The tempo is spry and upbeat inflected with catchy piano and sax. On “Stars Fell On Alabama” there is a sentimental coolness at work, particularly in the piano, leading into excellent sax and bass solos. Dorough’s vocals, including some scat singing are a real treat. The gorgeous piano and sax in the slow moving and expressive “The Shadow Of Your Smile” is another track that will stay with you long after the playing has stopped.

But For Now is a record of tremendous feeling and expression, a fine last album from an American icon of jazz. Highly recommended!
