Ostle, Curtis: No Mind

On jazz bassist Curtis Ostle’s debut album titled No Mind, the artist reflects on his time living in Shanghai and New York City. Ostle currently resides in Washington DC. No Mind is another excellent jazz album in a year where there has been many.

I cannot emphasize enough just what a great group of players these cats are and they show it right out of the gate with the excellent opening track “Shanghai Daydream”. Saxophone and trumpet complemented with a fluid bass line begins the piece in delightful fashion. Just when you think the music will take off it settles back down again into a more contemplative vibe. I love how the sax and trumpet intermingle in unison and when those swirling synths creep in it really adds another dimension to the band’s sound as synth in jazz is something you don’t hear every day. “Lia’s Song” features a real nice groove and melodic piano, trumpet and sax. Sax and trumpet trade solo spots leading to more great solos on piano and bass. The band is really flying towards the end especially the fantastic drum work from Itay Morchi. The band slows it down for the mellow “Ruminations” where the wordless vocals of Teresa Lee and lovely trumpet and saxophone solos provide the highlights. The stop/starting rhythm section and more great sax and trumpet embellishments make “Name Droppin” another excellent track.

No Mind is just an impressive jazz album with great grooves and solos and stellar band interplay. Certainly high on my list of jazz albums from 2018.
