Deferrari, Emiliano: Monty
Italian solo artist Emiliano Deferrari is another new name to me but has three solo albums to his credit. The artist, residing in Belgian since 2015, plays all the instruments himself including piano, keyboards, fretless bass, drums, acoustic and electric guitars, violins, pocket sax, voices and programming. That is an impressive list of instruments indicating an artist with tremendous talent. Deferrari also adds some strong vocals, mostly in Italian. The album’s title Monty refers to Deferrari’s recording studio of the same name.
This a loosely based concept album about man’s “slow descent into hell”, as stated in the press release. I suppose the concept of freewill enters into the equation as we all have a choice of which path we wish to follow.
The first track “Aria” is a short symphonic instrumental, a little gothic but ending too soon. I would have loved to have heard the theme further developed. On “Essere” Deferrari’s piano, drum and vocal skills are in fine form. It’s a nice jazz offering with a slightly minimalist approach. "Ecco” is another jazzy track with a bit of an art rock feel, pretty mellow with gently paced keyboards and drums. The bass work is also quite good. Nice keyboard work accentuates the pretty art rock of ”L’altroverso” while the next track “Vuoto” combines funkier elements, particularly in the keyboard and bass department. The disc ends with the slightly electronic and keyboard dominated “Fuoco”, probably my favourite track. The layered vocal arrangement is definitely a high point.
Although I would call most of Monty art rock, with some Italian prog influences as well, Deferrari offers a unique sound in the genre. This will definitely warrant a few more spins.
