Talk about a complete 'about face'....Cimbric Yarns is the thirteenth release from German melodic, Celtic, & progressive death metal act Suidakra, and follows up their very impressive Realms of Odoric from 2016. Here, the band goes full tilt into Celtic folk, putting aside all their electric instruments for a pure acoustic album featuring banjo, violins, acoustic guitar, flute, and harmonica, though some keyboards are employed for orchestral effect in spots. Male and female vocals are used exceptionally well throughout the album, and though there's pretty much no 'metal' here to speak of, as far as the band creating an enjoyable Celtic folk album, it's a job well done. Not hard to get swept away with alluring songs such as "At Nine Light Night" or "Serpentine Origins", the vocals dreamy and layered in such as great way, and the wealth of acoustic guitar tapestries, banjo, and violin are ever present. "Snakehenge" features some mighty symphonic keys that complement the gorgeous acoustic guitars, and the beautiful "A Day and Forever" contains some of the most poignant female vocals on the album, and though English obviously isn't her main language, she's spot on with her delivery.
Those looking for some of Suidakra's normal powerhouse, bombastic metal might lose a little patience with Cimbric Yarns, but as far as Celtic folk goes, this is very well done and obviously was a labor of love for the band. Nice job.
