Carptree: Subimago

Sweden’s Carptree have been one of my favourite bands for years now. I look forward to every new album as they are one of the most consistently creative bands around. Count me as a big fan of their eclectic symphonic progressive rock. The new album is titled Subimago and like their previous disc Emerger it is an excellent offering. Vocalist Niclas Flinck and multi-instrumentalist Carl Westholm along with the No Future Orchestra have really outdone themselves this time.

A dense soundscape, quiet and heavy at times turns into softer moments, showcases the band’s excellent musicianship and creative ‘thinking outside the box’ songwriting in the album opening “Welcome”. Everything sounds great from the vocals to each instrument and the production quality is superb. Pulsating synths, multiple crescendos, lush soundscapes and lovely background vocals highlight the stunning “By Your Own Device”. Bursts of symphonic orchestrations along with Beatles-like pop elements had me completely captivated. Spacey elements and a very catchy chorus make “World Without Mind” another great track. The beautifully lush “Instead Of Life”, the dynamically rich “Celestial Sky” and the dramatic symphonic prog of “Eye Of The Storm” are more must hear highlights.

Carptree have been one of the most consistent bands in progressive rock and have continued that trend with Subimago. In fact, this just might be their best release to date. A Reingold Records release.
