TumbleTown: Never Too Late

Bands new to me just keep on coming. This latest discovery is the Dutch band Tumbletown and their new album Never Too Late, the follow up to their 2013 debut Done With The Coldness. TumbleTown presents the listener with a fine mixture of melodic/neo prog and sophisticated rock. The melodies, musicianship and vocals in my opinion are excellent. Reading a bit on line the vocals seemed to be the weak link but I disagree. They are totally absorbing, especially if you like a bit of theatrics mixed in. Lush symphonic keyboards and synths, soaring sometimes heavier lead guitar, lots of rock inspired leads and an excellent rhythm section all play to the band’s strengths. Spock’s Beard, Enchant, Pink Floyd, Steven Wilson and David Bowie are just a few of the band’s influences. One of my favourite tracks is the exceptional progressive rock of “Avalon”, at times quite dense and symphonic but changes often, adding acoustic guitar, spacey motifs and soaring leads of guitar and synths. More highlights include the multi layered “Do Not Leave Me Now” with a particularly excellent vocal performance from Han Uil and the eleven minute “Transatlantic”, a very nice progressive epic with the obligatory tempo changes and an ever changing palette of colours and sounds.

Never Too Late is absolutely recommended to fans of the above bands and anyone who digs melodic progressive rock. A Freia Music release.
