Chthonic: Battlefields of Asura

I can’t believe it’s already been five years since the last Chthonic album. Since the band has been so well-received for so long, there was never any doubt that anything new would be heavily anticipated. Fortunately, the band continues its winning streak with an album that sounds great and that continues to build on the qualities that have made the band so strong.

For those unfamiliar with Chthonic, the band has been going strong for over ten years and have been praised as “the Black Sabbath of Asia.” They don’t exactly sound like Black Sabbath, but that’s not the point. The point is that Chthonic is an innovative band that stands out from the pack because of their sound and their willingness to explore new areas. The band frequently draws on Taiwanese folk songs and also use traditional instruments regularly. Fans of extreme metal will also hear plenty of traditional metal instruments, including shrieking vocals and technically impressive guitars and drums. On this album, the band also brings Hong Kong diva Denise Ho into things. You can hear her on “Millennia’s Faith Undone.”

This is a strong new release from a legendary band. The band has undeniable energy and creativity and they play with such fierceness that they’re hard to resist. I really enjoyed “Souls of the Revolution” but liked even more the chanting on tracks like “Carved in Bloodstone” and “One Thousand Eyes.” If you haven’t discovered Chthonic, this is a good introduction, but don’t stop with this one"there’s plenty of other albums to discover!
