Ben-Hur, Roni/Harvie S: Introspection

Roni Ben-Hur is an accomplished jazz guitarist and along with Harvie S (bass) and Tim Horner (drums) have created a subtle and swinging trio jazz album that exudes thoughtfulness through the disc’s ten tracks. The concept behind the album is the reworking of ten tunes these artists consider to be often overlooked, covering greats such as Thelonious Monk, George Shearing and Jerome Kern.

The trio get into some swinging grooves but the approach is more introspective then in your face. The music is nuanced yet still irresistible, I couldn’t help tapping my feet while listening. The first couple tracks demonstrate the artistry of what you will discover. The first track “Prá Machucar Meu Coração�, written by Brazilian composer Ary Barroso, is highlighted by its smooth groove and lyrical guitar work. All three members are adept at their craft, working well in the pocket, playing off the other in a refined yet creative way. The bass and guitar trading solo spots is a certain highlight. On “Serenity� the beginning snare and cymbals offer a nice little workout before the winding bass line and toe tapping rhythms offer up another nice groove. The title track, originally written by Thelonious Monk, is another great interpretation showcasing the trio’s outstanding musicianship and melodic sensibility. Outstanding guitar and bass solos cap off the piece with a triumphant flair.
