Mahavatar: Go With The Do!

Mahavatar are a metal band that mixes powerful drumming with soaring guitars. Go With The Do! has both core metal guttural and more melodic vocals and does a good job of keeping the songs flowing. This debut CD has well crafted songs and features the fine guitar work of Karla Williams. Williams can really get around a guitar and songs like "Raw" show that she is not just a power-chord performer but a skilled musician.

But there isn't enough diversity in the playing and singing. Mahavatar's constant sonic soundscapes leaves no room to breath. For a band that boasts only two members (Williams and Lizza Hayson on Vocals) with 3 session players added, the sound fills every gap and tends to smother the listener. There is a fine art to using space to make the chaotic parts of a song more powerful. Mahavatar have not mastered this art.

The playing is entertaining and the vocals work the songs well, it just is the constant guitar buzz and lack of any true bass line that make this CD monotonous by about the 3rd song. I have had this CD in and out of my player for over 3 weeks now and I must say that if I pop in the CD and just play a random song or two, I usually enjoy it. But I am asked to review this as a complete album and Go With The Do! just does not add anything to the metal genre that is worth raving about.

My Score:

hey I like that record and i want to hear more of them. In europe there is to litte of this sort of mudic, but is it so that only New Yorkers know how to do it? Maybe so and I do look forward to forthcoming album of Mahvatar, which will be out in the summer of 2006. The trash traces are hopefully still there
