Nelson, Bill: Chance Encounters in the Garden of Lights (2 CD Remastered & Expanded Edition)

The name Bill Nelson has become synonymous with popular music of many genres and varieties. He has never been afraid to venture outside the confines of conventional wisdom and such is the case with his 1987 double album titled Chance Encounters in the Garden of Lights originally released on his Cocteau label but now long out of print. That is until 2017 when Esoteric Recordings gave it some love and remastering as well as adding over twenty bonus tracks.

Here we have the guitar master exploring the world of ambient music creating a number of shorter pieces that you just have to give in to and let yourself go wherever the music wishes to take you. It might be a lonely beach or a medieval castle but whatever the place the ambient washes of guitar and electronics will surely set you free. Nelson’s soft tones and multi-coloured palette make for a totally relaxing and immersive listen and with over sixty tracks there is a lot to dig into. The music comes in two sets; disc one and two are titled The Angel at the Western Window and The Book of Inward Conversation respectively. It would be rather pointless to describe individual tracks as this should be listened to as a whole piece.

If you appreciate the meditative side of music and like the works of artists like Daniel Crommie, David Sylvan and Brian Eno, I think this will be well worth your time. Recommended.
