Rachbach, Tim: Under One Moon

Twenty-three year old Tim Rachbach grew up in Arizona and joined the Tucson Jazz Institute becoming their drummer from 2010 to 2013. In 2013 he moved to New York and there he attended the Manhattan School Of Music. On his debut album titled Under One Moon the drummer/composer has surrounded himself with some exceptional talent including Adam O’Farrill (trumpet), Xavier Del Castillo (tenor sax), Manuel Schmiedel (piano, synth) and Rick Rosato (bass).

Listening to the first track “Ancient Thread” one thing becomes clear, this is a talented and creative ensemble. It’s an adventurous track with plenty of groove, gripping melodies and creative band interplay. Song dynamics are highlighted especially the variation between urgent instrumental fireworks and more contemplative and quieter interludes. As the music quiets down the bass and trumpet do their work before the entire band builds into a scorching crescendo. The band certainly has a knack for improvisation and these musicians can play with the best of them. With “The Feels” a superb bass solo amidst crisp stick work and flutterings of piano creates more highlights. The groove is slow and luxurious in the slightly romantic nostalgia of “Living Noire” with the piano, sax and trumpet really catching my ear. The sax solo is as good as it gets. The title track starts off slow and melodic with nice horn rhythms and carries through on some languid sax and piano, steadily building as the drums become more complex and the instruments heat up before settling back down again. The trumpet solo is absolutely mesmerizing. It’s another excellent track in what is a very good modern jazz album.

Under One Moon displays instrumental song craft and adept improvisation you would expect from a veteran group of musicians. Their young age makes this music very special indeed.
