Zero Down: Larger Than Death

Veteran members of the Seattle Metal/Punk scene came together in 2002 to form the band Zero Down, and their second full length album, Larger Than Death has been released via Minotauro Records. This 10 song album harkens back to your High School days when the local bands wrote mediocre songs about cars, girls and drinking. Yeah, this album is THAT! Attitude, piss and vinegar and average songs at best.

Vocals are delivered in that old school Hardcore, punch you in the face, shouting style, while the music is a more of a bluesy Hard Rock fare. Songs like, "High Priestess" have a thick chugging riff, but gives way to an overly repeated chorus that begins to grate on your nerves. I'm not sure if Zero Down's "Western Movies" is a tip of the hat to Lemmy and Motorhead's classic line in their song "Shoot You In The Back" or not, but I'd like to think so, even though it sounds nothing like Motorhead.

While Zero Down are self proclaimed as a 70's styled Arena Rock band, they fall short of that lofty claim. They do have a few points where they do have that anthem vibe, as in their song "Horns", as in the Metal "Dio" Horns. As cliche as it is, it does get a Metal fans attention (always does). Overall, this is an average record by an average sounding Hard Rock/Metal band. There is not a lot to sink your Metal teeth into on Larger Than Death, but Zero Down gets a little bit of credit for letting the Metal Fandom shine right through their bland songs.
