Haunt: Burst Into Flame

Northern California based Metal band, Haunt, have released their debut record, Burst Into Flame (Shadow Kingdom Records) which is a decidedly retro flavor. Blending Classic Heavy Metal stylings and a 70's Hard Rock vibe to their music, Burst Into Flame has a Thin Lizzy/Iron Maiden type, twin guitar dynamic to them and the duo harmonizing is well used throughout this debut effort.

Haunt are what people are now calling NWOTHM (New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal) and this throwback sound and feel isn't that much of a surprise with band leader, Trevor William Church's musical linage of being the son of Bill Church (original member of Hard Rock legends Montrose and also Sammy Hagar's solo band). Trevor William Church's vocals and guitar playing leads Haunt on this 9 track debut. "Reflectors" is steeped in that '70's Thin Lizzy twin guitar goodness and "Heroes" shows depth with its almost 'Stoner' vibe that is rich and thick. Church's vocals are often very layered, creating an eeriness to his vocal deliver, making the vocals quite unique. Along with Trevor William Church on twin guitar duties is John William Tucker and the pair craft harmony leads of some sort on every song, a lost melodic art, for sure. Tasty!

Haunt have a straight ahead, old school Metal/Hard Rock album here with Burst Into Flame. Production is quite simple and it's not an "angry" sounding record at all, in fact, they have a subtlety to their hooks that find a way of getting stuck in your head. This debut doesn't set the world on fire and isn't really anything that you haven't heard before, but their old school writing and nod to the greatness of the the late 70's and early 80's has served them well on this 38 minute release.
