Max Moran and Neospectric: Neospectric

New Orleans jazz bassist Max Moran’s debut album Neospectric morphed from a jam session ten years earlier as the musician had gotten together with some friends and just ‘played’. From those initial seeds we now have a full album from a top notch ensemble with Moran leading the charge. His playing is superb, completely locked into the groove yet venturing outside the box in new and creative ways. If you were expecting a typical modern jazz album you need to look elsewhere. With Neospectric the band has taken ‘60s and ‘70s influences like Parliament and Earth, Wind and Fire and has made an album loaded with emotion and soul.

The rocking funk of “All Right” is a great opener. This one harkens back to Parliament as the band is searing with fiery guitar and trumpet solos. “Red” has a more chilled out sound but still groovy featuring fabulous saxophone workouts. The band lighten up the mood with the softer “Summer” as the guitar and keyboards produce dreamier contours. The band rocks out again on “Chest” where bursts of organ and guitar flirt with shifting tempos and great bass grooves. A bit of Earth, Wind and Fire can be heard on the super catchy “Continuation”, a tasty soulful slice of funky rock with some fine guitar from John Maestas and smooth alto sax courtesy of Donald Harrison. More highlights have to be “The Grass” where the drums and bass are at their funky best as well as the trippy/psychedelic “Far Away” featuring Moran’s otherworldly bass experimentations.

Neospectric is just an excellent album with some of the deepest grooves I have heard all year. I highly recommend it.
