Battleroar: Codex Epicus

As Greek epic heavy metal band Battleroar approach their 20 year anniversary together, they've unleashed their latest collection of fist pumping anthems for Cruz Del Sur, titled Codex Epicus. With eight brand new songs (nine if you get the CD version), Battleroar once again take their potent metal attack, which hints at influences from Manowar, Manilla Road, Iron Maiden, and Candlemass, and deliver the goods with plenty of power metal, prog, and doom elements. In fact, late Manila Road legend Mark Shelton even appears on lead vocals for "Sword of the Flame", a mid paced, doomy number featuring his trademark vocal style over lumbering riffs, background choir, and symphonic keyboards. Most of these new tracks are lengthy, falling between the 5-8 minute mark, highlights being the majestic might of "The Doom of Medusa", the galloping "We Shall Conquer", and the raging maelstrom that is "Kings of Old". If you love recent Iron Maiden output, you'll surely appreciate the epic sounds of "Enchanting Threnody", the vocals of Gerrit Mutz soaring over meaty riffs and blazing twin guitars.

Very solid from top to bottom, Battleroar doesn't look to reinvent the wheel here on Codex Epicus, but they don't have to, it's just an all around cool heavy metal album, and that's quite good enough.
