Airrace: Untold Stories

If there was any justice in the world Airrace would be infinitely better known than they are - much, much better known, however, it is fair to say that in reality the band are about as fashionable as a rah-rah skirt, airships or Buster Keaton. Actually the Keaton reference is particularly apt as he was a true artist and time, the ever changing industry and technology have made his work seem anachronistic. In a similar way Airrace play the deeply unfashionable melodic rock was once vaguely popular thirty years ago.

The band, current line-up, Adam Payne -vocals, Laurie Mansworth - guitar, Rocky Newton - bass , Linda Kelsey Foster - keyboards and Dhani Mansworth - drums, do what they do very well indeed and draw upon influences such as Zep and ELO. Straightforward melodic rock is their main forte and is much in evidence in the first three tunes on the album but "Men from The Boys" shows a darker, more menacing side to the band. The single "Summer Rain" lurks fairly close to the end of the record and is, according to Laurie Mansfield, “a song for the summer. I wanted to write something upbeat with a positive feel, as there is far too much doom and gloom around at the moment. This song will hopefully take you to a sunny day and lift your spirit." It’s also the most ELO-like song on evidence and given that ELO are touring stadia and enormodomes there’s clearly a market for Airrace’s tight, expertly performed melodic rock so if Frontiers can give them a bit of a push there’s time for past wrongs to be out right.
