Freckle Legend: The Long Walk Home

Freckle Legend is the project of New York drummer RJ Rabin. Rabin has spent the past three decades contributing to other people’s music but has now decided to express himself as a leader. The album is titled The Long Walk Home and folks, it’s a beauty. He has also enlisted some tremendous musicians including Rozhan Razman (bass), Cale Hawkins (piano, keyboards, vocals), Adam Stoler (guitar), Benjamin Drazen (alto and tenor saxophones) and Teddy Kumpel (guitar on tracks 2,6 & 9) as well as guests Doug Hinrichs (congas and percussion on track 10) and Eli Asher (trumpet on track 10).

Squelching saxophone and a frenzied guitar attack highlight the disc’s opening track “Forensic Pathology”. It’s a grooving upbeat slice of avant jazz that is still incredibly ear catching. The sax and guitar improvisations just need to be heard. Big bass and organ form a joyous melody and the two guitarists add some searing licks with a bluesy feel. More addictive and bluesy guitar work in the form of chopped up chords and melodic lines can be found on the catchy “If At First” followed by the soulful pop of “All Of This” featuring a smooth groove and expressive lead vocals. The band can also rock, just listen to the funk rock escapades on the excellent “Debris”. The sax solo hits the spot in a big way. The band then slow it down with the soul pop ballad “This Is The Time” with dreamy piano throughout. With “Sunflower Sutra” the spectral guitar work of Kumpel is rather otherworldly offering moody textures and coloured atmospheres.

The Long Walk Home is a refined and well-crafted piece of music that will appeal to many fans across a variety of genres. Sophistication is its very essence. Recommended.
