Iron Void: Excaliber

UK doom act Iron Void are back with their third release, this one for Shadow Kingdom Records and titled Excaliber, which features nine new songs that show their love of classic genre acts Black Sabbath, Pentagram, and Saint Vitus. Consisting of Jonathan "Sealey" Seale (bass & vocals), Steve Wilson (guitars & vocals), and Richard Maw (drums), the trio have done a great job here of dialing up that 'old school' doom vibe, tracks like "The Coming of a King" and "Dragon's Breath" having both the '70s production characteristics as well as creepy atmosphere, and when saddled alongside the sheer power of the arrangements, makes for a winning combination. Wilson is a total riff-master, as he churns out one steamrolling load of riff-o-rama after another on solid tracks such as "Lancelot of the Lake", "Forbidden Love", the deliciously plodding "Enemy Within", and the mini-epic "The Death of Arthur". Bassist Seale has a voice perfectly suited for this style of classic doom, his upper register delivery has a majestic, anthemic feel that helps drive these heavy songs to regal heights, and even on his more tender moments, as on the closing folky track "Avalon", it's a marriage that really works.

Good stuff here, Iron Void once again delivering a modern doom record that's all about the classic early beginnings when this style of metal had its birth. Seek this one out if you crave the mighty riff, you won't be disappointed.
