Morrison’s Vibe: Strange Nights
Morrison’s Vibe is an American project heavily influenced, by you guessed it, Jim Morrison and The Doors. The band consists of Tanner Sefikoy (vocals, guitar, programming), Jon Grooms (bass) and Nivic Minst (drums).
The album is titled Strange Nights and it is the band’s reimaging of what a sequel to The Doors classic album Strange Days might sound like. The band incorporates talking and sung vocals much like Morrison did and Sefikoy’s voice is certainly of a similar vein. The guitars are mostly fuzzy and loud, sometimes quite uneven and off kilter like in the strange “Lizard king Death (a recap)”. Bursts of guitar shards through spoken words and fragmented beats makes for a pretty cool track. More heavy riffs can be heard on “(Title Of) Lizard King”, another pretty good track. The band stretch out on the ten minute “Proclamation” heading into avant rock territory during the guitar improvisation work out. The band gives a heavier treatment to “Light My Fire”, the only cover here, with some slashing guitar and neat effects. The disc ends with “Fire In The Lighthouse”, a piece with too much talking and not enough music. I understand the artist is trying to channel Morrison’s poetic stylings but the song’s a bit too loose and free. The effects are trippy and psychedelic but there needs to be more structure.
My other complaint is the album’s production as the drums are often buried in the mix. If the band is able to improve upon this in the future and smooth out some of the rough edges there is certainly potential for an excellent album. Will have to wait and see.
