Groover von Krüger: The Scientist and The Monkey

Groover von Krüger, out of Melbourne, Australia makes high energy rock music on their second EP titled The Scientist and The Monkey.

In the band are:

Der Groover (bass, vocals)
Le Marquis du Shred (guitars)
The Baron Brutus McBludgeon (drums)
Il Duca della Duchesse (vocals)

Given the member’s band names the quartet has a sense of humour, even a bit Zappaesque in places. Rock, funk, even some jazzy undertones give this music an eclecticism that sets it apart from the mainstream. The first track “Dynamite” is pure unadulterated heavy rock with loads of fuzzy riffs and high octane energy. The vocals have almost a Wolfman Jack feel, remember him? On the sleazy rock of “Pussy & Pancakes” the thunderous guitar riffs, ripping solo and George Thorogood style vocals makes for a good party track. Just don’t expect an in depth lyrical statement in this one. Funky slap bass and horns forms the title track until a guitar freak out takes the music into something Frank Zappa would be proud of. Floating keyboards adds a nice touch to “Magic Beans” along with a good dose of psychedelic fuzz. The last track “Already Gone” is informed by funk, jazz and fusion elements. The distorted spoken word vocals, shredding guitar and single piano notes form a disparate approach that fits nicely with its chilled groove and melody.

The Scientist and The Monkey is a solid album that should be eclectic enough to attract a wide range of fans from a variety of genres. I quite enjoyed it and look forward to hearing where the artist goes from here.
