Sundrifter: Visitations

Now this is some meaty stuff right here!! Visitations is the second full-length (and first for Small Stone) album from Boston based power trio Sundrifter, who are comprised of guitarist/vocalist Craig Peura, drummer Patrick Queenan, and bassist Paul Gaughran. The music here is like the bastard child of a late night orgy between early Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, and Queens of the Stone Age, lots of heavy, fuzz laden riffing, high pitched vocals, and pounding drumming. "Sons of Belial" really dials up some cool riffs along with menacing atmosphere, while the more upbeat "Lightworker" also features nimble rhythms and some tasty lead guitar work from Peura. "Targeted" is nice and moody, the brooding riffs and dreamy vocals playing off each quite well, but the strongest of the lot here is the crushing "Till You Come Down", a piledriving doom track that just levels everything in its wake. Fans of Alice in Chains will love the haunting power of "Hammerburn" as well as the grungy doom of the lengthy "Fire in the Sky".

Mighty fine material from start to finish, and damn heavy, Visitations is another winner from the folks over at Small Stone, and proudly announces the arrival of Sundrift, a band that have a bright future ahead of themselves if this potent effort is any indication. Recommended.

Sundrifter: Visitations
Posted by Jon Neudorf, SoT Staff Writer on 2018-12-19 04:22:15
My Score:

I’m not sure why but I am digging the stoner metal genre more and more each day. I have always been a fan of ‘60s and ‘70s psych and I suppose some of the bands I have heard recently really scratched that itch. Take for instance my latest discovery, Boston based power three piece Sundrifter and their new album titled Visitations, the follow up to their debut album Not Coming Back (2016).

If you enjoy bands like Queens Of The Stone Age, Soundgarden and even Hawkwind I think you will find there is a lot to love about Sundrifter. The first track “Sons Of Belial” begins with a galloping riff and soaring lead vocals. The riffs are soaked in fuzz and vary between a fast and slower doomier pace. It’s an exciting tune and a great choice to start the album. This is heavy stoner metal of the highest order. “Death March” is another heavy track with lots of fuzz but this time there is a more pronounced psychedelic element. With the super catchy “Lightworker” I hear a bit of Hawkwind with the fuzzy layers and fine guitar work. The vocals are very good, as they are throughout the album. More mellowed guitar flavours the psychedelic tinged “Targeted”, a bit ethereal and spacey. The guitar riffs build, getting back the heaviness and setting a quicker pace. The heavy chug in “Hammerburn” and the more proggy “Fire In The Sky” with its brief spasmodic guitar injections are more great tracks.

Sundrifter has made an excellent sophomore album with Visitations. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Released on Small Stone Records.
