Treat: Tunguska

Having been left somewhere between cold and decidedly lukewarm by Treat’s previous two platters Coup de Grace from 2010 and Ghost of Graceland which came out a couple of years ago I have to say that I am totally astonished at how much I dig the bizarrely named Tunguska. “The album title is a reference to a mysterious large explosion that took place in Siberia in 1908, but metaphorically and artistically, "Tunguska" represents the last piece of the puzzle to be put in place since the band’s reunion,” says guitarist, producer and founding member Anders Wikstrom. He goes on to say, "We managed to dig deeper into the lyrical content, and musically, the dynamics in the songs and production are more distinct as we let heavy, raunchy stuff co-exist with the softer side of the band.”

What the band has found is the almost perfect alchemy between melodic hard rock and pop sensibilities so much so that at times especially during "Always Have, Always Will" and "Riptide" I thought that Kissin’ Dynamite and the Backstreet Boys had joined forces. I even had the cheesy dance moves mapped out in my mind. I think that the Kissin’ Dynamite comparison is appropriate and that Tunguska is the kind of album which that band has been needing to make for the last five or so years. Eclipse, W.E.T. are other bands which come into mind and Treat have managed to ally strong kooks and melodies with punchy playing and production like those aforementioned bands. In every conceivable way this is Treat’s best album since their comeback started and quite possibly their best ever.
