Zevious: Lowlands

This album surprised me because of its variety, its varied compositions, and its overall sound. The band formed back in 2007 and quickly became known for their blend of prog, jazz, and metal. Even if listeners approach this album knowing what to expect, they are still likely to be surprised. Zevious isn’t just mixing musical components; they are showing us what extreme music can do with that much more experimentation and ambition. Fortunately, the band knows what they’re doing and deliver a solid 45 minutes of music that stretches the ears without annoying the listener with just how “out there” they can be.

The band’s first two albums honed their unique sound while this one gives them a chance to expand into something even more experimental, polymetric, and cool. I willingly followed the various directions of each song but really caught on with “Null Island,” a track with a solid hook that takes listeners into dark and fascinating musical directions. That track also has some cool melodic passages that resonate with everything else that’s going on. By the time you get sucked in, you’ve followed the band into experimental new directions without ever feeling lost or bored. If “Null Island” was my favorite track, there are plenty of other highlights, including the rhythmic excitement of “Ritual Based Symmetries” and the dissonant opening to “Smear Campaign.” For those new to Zevious, this album may require a couple of listens, but it’s worth discovering.
