Jonny G: Jonny G

Jonny G (aka Jon Greathouse) has been plying his trade in the Los Angeles music scene for a number of years now mostly focusing in television and films as well as working with other musicians. His debut self-titled EP was released in 2017 but I’m just giving it a listen now.

Greathouse plays smooth fusion and jazz, all very melodic with solid musicianship throughout these seven tracks. “Nanobyte Me” begins the disc with an up-tempo slice of well-crafted fusion. Greathouse is a fine keyboardist and displays his chops all over the place as well as his expert use of loops. Tasty guitar and keyboard solos give the softer “Ice Cream Changes” a bit more kick. I like the band’s crisp playing and the recording quality is excellent. Even mellower is the jazzy “The Point Is What?” featuring a nice bit of languid saxophone from Doug Webb. “Lucky The Cat” is a nice tribute to his cat (RIP) and combines funky bass with G’s shredding keyboard attack. A well thought out and uplifting track. “Panama Staycation” has a hint of Latin with its breezy island feel and excellent keyboard solos. On “A Hole In A Horn” a jazzier Steely Dan came to mind which for me is never a bad thing.

Jonny G and his band have created a nice bit of fusion. It isn’t mind blowing but it is ultimately a satisfying listen. An independent music release.
