Yesternight: The False Awakening

I’ve stated this many times but one of the best aspects of reviewing music is discovering outstanding albums from band’s you had no idea existed. This is the case with Polish band Yesternight and their debut album The False Awakening. The band play moody progressive rock but also dip their toes into neoprog and progressive metal. According to the press release the band is influenced from the likes of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Anathema and in my opinion that would be a fair assessment although Yesternight does not sound completely like any of those bands. The music is very moody, a little melancholy with suitably dark atmospherics and blends slowly evolving textures with heavier moments of intense guitar riffs with a powerful rhythm section. This excellent album begins with the short and moody title track. Eerie sounding effects and unsettled narration give off an almost chilling vibe that is soothed over with wonderful backing vocals and a riveting guitar solo in the vein of David Gilmour. Next is “My Mind”, a superb slice of progressive metal and melancholic prog. Busy drum work, exceptional bass playing and more delightful guitar can be heard throughout. The accessible “Who You Are” starts restrained and slowly builds with a great drum roll. Powerful drumming and intense riff progressions take the song into heavy prog territory. On “Solitude”, moody and enhanced whispered vocals and an eerie drum beat give the beginning a disturbing vibe before a pretty guitar arpeggio unfolds. The band’s use of effects in their song craft adds another dimension to the music. More melodic tracks include the heavy neo prog of “About You”, the pretty and heartfelt “To Be Tree” and the gripping builds in “Yesternight” where the guitar playing is a highlight throughout. The album ends with “Just Try!”, the disc’s longest track. More wonderfully eerie soundscapes, catchy choruses, superb keys and my favourite guitar solo on the disc. A great way to end the album.

Yesternight has shown with The False Awakening they are a band to look out for. An excellent debut from a group of musicians with no weak points. I can’t wait to hear more from Yesternight in the future.

A 12 Sounds Production.
