Abhorrence: Megalohydrothalassophobic

I knew that Abhorrence was back and that they were plotting something new, but I had no idea it would be so engrossing. The band was always raw and brutal, but this EP offers us more of both. From start to finish, this EP chugs and churns from track to track in ways that arrest the attention and remind listeners that Finnish Death Metal is as powerful as ever. If you like death metal with real musical weight, then this is what you’ve been waiting for.

Lyrically, this EP connects H. P. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror with concerns over ecological catastrophes. This connection is natural since both Lovecraft and discussions of climate change focus on a world without us. Abhorrence takes these themes and combines them further still with the writings of Timothy Morton, a leading expert on ecological horrors. The result is an album that addresses contemporary concerns while also holding on to the thematic horrors we expect from extreme music.

I’ve talked about this album enough. The best thing you can do is give it a listen and see for yourself. Abhorrence is back and they are as brutal and as bold as ever. Check out “Anthem for the Anthropocene” and “Hyperobject Beneath the Waves.” If you like both of them, check out the whole EP. It’s worth a listen.
