Slasher Dave: Frights

I’m writing this on October 1 which is appropriate because this album is a great kick-off to horror season. I’ve always loved Halloween and music like this gets me ready for an evening out at a haunted house attraction. Slasher Dave is probably best known as the frontman for Acid Witch, but he’s also a solo artist who likes to see just how heavy his instrumental synth music can be. The songs on this album could serve two purposes. For the most part, they are just horror-laden instrumental tracks that you could put on when you aren’t in the mood to relax (or to sleep). They could also be backing tracks at your very own haunted house. With titles like “Strobe Room” or “Blue Labyrinth,” this album even gives you some good ideas for scaring your patrons.

The music here is a nice mix of analog synthesizers, bass, guitar, and sampled effects, including voices. The whole thing was composed and otherwise put together by Slasher Dave and he’s done a nice job. I enjoyed “Video 1 (Late Fees),” probably because I remember the days when you actually had to pay those stupid fees. The music on that track was also a nice throwback to what I can only call 80s horror whimsy. There are also cool atmospheric tracks like “Fulzzi” and “Blue Labyrinth (Fogmaze) that should give John Carpenter fans something to enjoy. That was probably my favorite track of the bunch. Like any good haunted house, though, there are plenty of other rooms to explore here. Just remember to watch your step and to keep moving. You don’t want to get lost here.
