Blackrat: Dread Reverence
Blackrat is one of those underground bands that comes to the surface just long enough for a few more people to take notice. And people should take notice. Blackrat is a solid band that performs a rugged and powerful blend of punk, metal, and thrash. There is no posturing and no flexing, just raw musical power played without frills. If you listen to this album, you’ll notice that the production is just clear enough to follow what’s going on but not so clear that you think the whole thing was manufactured. Blackrat wanted to capture the feel of an underground venue and they’ve done a good job of it. If you listen to the opening riff of “Headless Countess,” you can hear the band at their clearest. They’ve given the guitars a relatively strong sound but wisely kept the vocals raw. Aside from “Headless Countess,” I recommend listening to “Coffin Rock,” a meaty punk track that nearly pushes itself beyond its main tempo. It’s a killer track, definitely one of this album’s highlights. If you like those two songs, check out “Haunter of the Threshold,” a killer track that lets the band add some spooky-sounding guitar work to the mix.
