Snider, Dee: For the Love of Metal

I was prepared to really dislike this album...sure, I'll be the first to admit I've never been much of a Twisted Sister fan, either their music or image, since the band first hit it big back in the early/mid '80s. Frontman Dee Snider certainly has been an ambassador for all things hard rock & metal over the years, that I'll give him, and he's a charismatic vocalist, but other than that he generally doesn't warrant a blip on my musical radar. However, For the Love of Metal completely surprised the hell out of me, a heavy, heavy record that's easily the most 'metal' recording this guy has been involved in since the very early days of Twisted Sister. Produced by Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta and featuring appearances from Howard Jones (ex-Killswitch Engage), Mark Morton (Lamb Of God), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Joel Grind and Nick Bellmore (Toxic Holocaust) and Charlie Bellmore (Kingdom Of Sorrow), For the Love of Metal is instantly catchy, chock full of molten riff-o-rama, with Snider sounding more confident than he has in decades, saddling up to some of these more modern metal singers and more than holding his own. "American Made", "Lies Are a Business", and "I Am the Hurricane" are instant heavy metal anthems, providing plenty of headbanging moments and singalong choruses, the guitar riffs lethal at every turn. "I'm Ready" is near thrash in its intensity, and tracks like "Mask", "Roll Over You", and the title cut contain some of the grooviest, chunkiest metal I've heard in some time. White-Gluz is featured alongside Snider on the potent "Dead Hearts (Love Thy Enemy)", another highlight on an album of highlights.

Glad to see Dee Snider cranking out some serious music here on For the Love of Metal, and, I'm more than willing to eat some crow and admit I was wrong to assume that he didn't have this in him. Good stuff!
