Nevin, Martin: Tenderness is Silent

As per usual there are no shortest of excellent jazz albums out this year and the latest from New York bassist Martin Nevin is no exception. He has performed with many well-known artists but Tenderness is Silent is his first as a band leader. Joining Nevin are Sam Harris (piano), Craig Weinrib (drums), Kyle Wilson (tenor saxophone) and Roman Filiú (alto saxophone).

This is a mellow album and perhaps most important are not the notes themselves but the space between them. The players have subtlety and nuance nearly perfected as these twelve tracks take their time to slowly evolve and gel with the listener. The title track opens the album with calming drums and piano. The cymbal work aids in this dream led state before the piano and bass intermingle in a complex dance of minimalism. “Egon” has alto and tenor saxophone drifting with the piano ever so slowly. You really need to be paying attention to fully absorb all the nuance this album has to offer. For a more bluesy feel try “The First Of Many Exits” with superb drumming and solo piano and the more abstract “A Hundred Years Of Talk”. A reprise of the title track signs off the album with sultry piano and sax.

Tenderness is Silent takes some time to grow but when it does its calming nature and slow burning musicianship will leave an indelible imprint on jazz fans across the board. Recommended.
