Lynne Arriale Trio: Give Us These Days

Jazz pianist Lynne Arriale has released fourteen albums as a band leader including her latest titled Give Us These Days featuring Dutch musicians Jasper Somsen (double bass) and Jasper Van Hulten (drums).

With the first track the trio tackle the Joni Mitchell penned “Woodstock�, a real feast for the ears. The ensemble play is really quite stunning, from the busy drum work to the outstanding solo piano the band has chops to spare but with a keen sense of melodicism as well. The ripping ensemble play in “Appassionata� is both passionate and virtuosic including outstanding solo bass. Arriale’s sense of melody shines through in tracks like the light and airy “Finding Home� which includes another outstanding bass solo and the romantic “Another Sky� where the impressive stick work shows a deft of touch and the bass once again is given room to explore the soundscape. The boisterous “Over And Out� has the trio pulling out all the stops with great solos all around. Arriale’s interpretation of The Beatles’ classic “Let It Be� is quite nice before ending the disc with the Tom Waits penned “Take It With Me�, a beautifully reflective tune featuring the poignant vocals of Kate McGarry.

I highly recommend Give Us these Days for anyone who digs piano led jazz.
