Curha: I

New York City jazzer Curtis Hasselbring has been taking the less beaten path since the late ‘80s making genre expanding music not necessarily made for mass consumption. Under the moniker of Curha his new album is titled I and it is indeed a trip into uncharted waters.

The disc begins with the avant-garde psychedelic jazz of “Scissors”. Trombone and vibes form a large part of the artist’s left-of-center sound. With “Egon” the low end electronics and synthesized trip hop beats makes for another unusual sound collage. The use of weird beeps and blips totally fits the far reaching soundscape. “Respect the Pedestrian” with its pseudo acid surf guitar riff is quite catchy in a quirky sort of way. The dense synth laden sound palette of “Mystery Guest” is another example of avant-garde pop music. The esoteric sound effects feel completely at home. Electronics and urgent synthesized beats makes “Madgit” more unusual fare but no less endearing on the ears. The fully realized guitar lines and well placed keyboards in “Sir Fish” and the catchy acoustic strumming in the psychedelic tinged “’68” are two of the album’s finest moments. The shimmering keyboards and trombone in “Fish Coda” are more highlights.

While this is a very unusual album there is something this music I find totally endearing and the rewards are quite satisfying. An eclectic cauldron of pop, electronic, jazz and trip hop. Recommended to music fans not afraid to try something completely different.
