Anthimos, Apostolis: Parallel Worlds

Polish born multi-instrumentalist Apostolis Anthimos is perhaps best known to progressive rock aficionados as the long time guitarist for the Polish progressive rock band SBB, which he has been a member since 1971. He also has five solo albums including his most recent titled Parallel Worlds, released on Metal Mind Productions. I don’t often associate jazz with the label but nonetheless here it is and I have to say it is an excellent disc.

Throughout the albums fourteen tracks Anthimos supplies guitar and drums. On the first track “Story I�, after a serene introduction and delicate playing, the guitar work is a pure delight adding depth and colour to the sound palette. The ensuing guitar solo is outstanding. After an avant-garde beginning “Pinnochio’s Dream� settles in with excellent bass, saxophone and piano solos. The melodic “Back To The North� is quite breezy and airy with smooth sax and complex drumming. While Anthimos proves to be an outstanding musician he serves his band well allowing them the freedom of expression on their own terms. Anthimos’ electrified and distorted guitar tones along with Piotr Matusik’s creative piano on the title track and “2/5/1� are playful exercises in free form expression. The driving groove and sax in “Mussaka In The Evening� and the wonderful musicianship from all band members in the album ending “Story II� are more highlights.

Parallel Worlds is a creative and imaginative work from one of Poland’s most talented musicians. All jazz fans should check this out.
